How Long It Takes to Refill an Iron Reserve

The real question is almost never "how much iron should I take." It is "how long before I know whether this is doing anything." That question deserves a straight answer, and the straight answer is an uncomfortable one: nobody can hand you a date. What can be explained is why the date does not exist, and what an honest window of observation looks like instead.

A follicle keeps its own calendar

Scalp hair does not grow continuously. Each follicle runs a cycle: a long growth phase, a short transition, then a resting phase. Standard anatomy references put the growth phase at two to six years and the resting phase at approximately three months, and describe healthy hair growing at 0.35 mm per day, which works out to roughly half an inch a month.

Two consequences follow. The first is arithmetic. A follicle sitting in the resting phase is not growing anything. Whatever changes in the blood this week, that follicle has nothing to report until it releases the old shaft and begins a new one. The second is optics. When a new shaft does begin, it begins at zero length. At half an inch a month, a strand that starts today stays short enough to vanish into the rest of the hair for a good while.

So a follicle is not a screen. It is a slow printer. It prints what was true months ago, one line at a time, and there is no way to make it print faster by watching it.

The same interval turns up from the other direction. In telogen effluvium, the growth of telogen hairs ceases for one to six months, on average three, and a causative event is typically found around three months before the shedding begins. The lag is the cycle.

A reserve emptied over years does not refill in fifteen days

It helps to think of stored iron as a reservoir rather than as a level. Iron in the blood is what is moving through the pipe right now. Ferritin is closer to what is sitting in the tank. Those are two different questions answered by two different tests, which is the whole subject of Ferritin and Iron Are Not the Same Test.

Reservoirs empty slowly. A monthly loss that is barely worth noticing in a single cycle is not barely worth noticing across a decade of cycles. Add a pregnancy. Add years of eating in a way that was low in absorbable iron. Add a leak nobody thought to look for. The tank does not drop in a week. It drops along a slope. A slope that took years to descend is not climbed back in fifteen days, whatever is inside the capsule.

There is also a queue. When the reserve is thin, the body spends what it has on the functions it cannot pause. Oxygen transport does not wait. Hair is not an emergency, so hair waits its turn, which is what we lay out in Low Ferritin and Hair Shedding: The Order the Body Rations In. That queue matters for timing. Even in a rising tide, the last thing in line is the last to see the water.

The first condition of an honest judgment: completeness

Time only means something if the thing being timed is complete. Iron has to clear three steps inside the body. It has to be absorbed at the gut wall. It has to be converted and handled once it is inside. It has to be stored rather than spent the moment it arrives.

A product that only addresses the first step is not a shorter version of a complete formula. It is a different object. If the second or third step is unattended, waiting longer does not make up the difference. You would be measuring the patience of the wrong instrument.

This is why the composition question comes before the calendar question, and it is a question that can be settled in thirty seconds on the back of the box. Look at the form of the iron. Look at whether the cofactors appear in active forms or only under their familiar names. Look at the amounts, not only at the presence of a name. Four lines on a label are usually enough to tell whether you are holding a complete tool or a single ingredient in good packaging.

The second condition: a window, not a deadline

A deadline is a promise. A window is a plan for looking. The difference is who carries the risk when the guess turns out to be wrong.

Setting a window is simple.

  • Write down the date you start.
  • Keep the dose and the timing the same, because a routine that changes every fortnight cannot be evaluated at all.
  • If a measurement was taken beforehand, note which test it was and which lab ran it. Methods and reported ranges vary between labs, and only the same test compared against itself tells you anything.
  • Then stop checking. Looking in the mirror every morning measures your attention, not your hair.

Hair is a lagging indicator by design. It reports on conditions that were already in place when the current cycle began. A judgment made on a window shorter than a cycle is not an early judgment. It is a judgment about a different stretch of time than the one you meant to judge.

What a two-week promise can tell you

Some brands advertise a visible change in two weeks. That claim can be checked against the cycle before it is checked against anything else.

A follicle in its resting phase produces no new shaft, and a new shaft begins at zero length and lengthens by about half an inch a month. Set the two week figure next to those two facts and see whether it survives. This is not a matter of opinion about the brand. It is published anatomy, available to anyone who looks it up, and the references are at the foot of this page.

The same test applies to any promise with a figure attached. A number of weeks. A number of points on a lab report. Nobody knows how deep a given reserve is, how much a given person absorbs, or what may still be draining out of the tank. A brand that offers a figure anyway is offering a certainty it does not have.

What can honestly be said

The Reservoir Formula was built around the three steps rather than around one of them. Iron as chelated bisglycinate. One hundred milligrams of lactoferrin. Cofactors in active forms: methylcobalamin, L-5-MTHF, P5P, vitamin C, copper. Those are lines on a label, and lines on a label are the part anyone can verify without taking our word for it.

What we will not tell you is when. We do not know the depth of any particular reserve, and neither does anyone selling a timeline. What can be said is what the cycle is, why an honest window is counted in cycles rather than in weeks, and what to compare against what. Talk to your healthcare professional, keep the measurement consistent, and let the same test compared against itself do the talking.
